Focus on pseudoephedrine

Project Stop is an initiative of the Pharmacy Guild and law enforcement agencies to assist in preventing the diversion of pseudoephedrine products for the use of the production of illicit drugs.

Since 1 July 2011, details of persons purchasing products containing pseudoephedrine have been required to be taken by pharmacists and recorded as part of Project Stop.

Police in collaboration with South Australian Health, yesterday reported a 65-year-old pharmacist from the northern suburbs for supplying a prescription drug without a prescription, supplying a controlled precursor and six counts of failing to maintain and produce records of pseudoephedrine purchases.

As a pharmacist, failure to obtain details and record them appropriately has a maximum penalty of a fine of $3,000.

The man will be summonsed to appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court at a later date.

Any person with information relating to the unlawful purchase or distribution of pseudoephedrine should contact BankSA Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or report it online at www.sa.crimestoppers.com.au.
